She always stated that she was born on July 7, 1910, although the birth certificate attests that she was born on July 6, 1907. In 1938, André Breton, the initiator and theorist of surrealism, considered Frida Kahlo’s painting to be “a ribbon around a bomb.” The artist had a tumultuous marriage (today called “open”) with the great Mexican painter Diego Rivera. He suffered all his life, having many health problems, many caused by a terrible car accident suffered in his youth. The long recovery after the accident, a recovery that was never completely realized, isolated her somewhat from the rest of the world, this isolation, closure in itself, is reflected in his painting, explaining somewhat why most of his works are self-portraits. Many self-portraits are a reflection of the physical suffering caused by the aftermath of the accident. Frida has repeatedly stated: “I paint myself, because far too often I am alone and because I am the subject I know best.” He often said, “I was born a bitch. I was born a painter
